Black Oak Coffee Roasters just won a prestigious award at the 2023 US Coffee Championships, one of the biggest coffee competitions ever held.
Our head roaster Steve Cuevas is no stranger to appearing in and winning major competitions, (including, but not limited to, Champion Roaster at Golden Bean North America for two years running) so the pressure of the moment didn't weigh too heavily.
"I was reflecting on my 5 years of competition that led me to feel comfortable and at ease in this environment. Being familiar with the Stronghold machine had me feeling well prepared."
“A big thank you to our customers. You ordering our coffee is what trained us for this competition.”
“The many types of coffee that we roast, from our monthly Single Origins Tasting Club to Wagon Wheel to Duomo, teaches how to develop different coffees that can be enjoyed by anybody.”
72 Roasters entered the competition
18 made it to Portland
Our head roaster Steve Cuevas took the 2nd Place trophy
"I was excited. I knew I was gonna do good, it’s just like, how good am I going to do. I wasn’t surprised."
"In all honesty I feel proud to get to bring well deserved attention to Ukiah and
Black Oak. It’s such a beautiful place and amazing coffee is coming out of here. Even though I’m not from here, it’s my hometown."
We are enormously proud of our team and the passion, care and dedication they bring to the craft every day. It's amazing to be recognized for something that we know from tasting his creations every day, Steve is one the very best in the entire country.
