Bright, sweet, flavorful… an extremely well structured coffee from the shores of Lake Kivu

Tasting Notes

Bright white grape, meyer lemon, and orange burst out of the first sip of this coffee. That acidity is mellowed by abundant light brown sugar sweetness that tempers the white grape into golden raisin and the citrus into candied citrus peel. The cup finishes with a blend of herbaceous marshmallow-like notes and chocolate, creating the impression of cacao nibs.

About The Producer

This coffee is the product of a producer group we featured in 2022: the “People’s Farm” in collaboration with Kivubelt. Kivubelt was founded by Furaha Umwizey, a native of Rwanda who studied economics in Switzerland. The two mills they operate serve both the Kivubelt Estate and around 500 smallholder farmers from the surrounding area. These smallholder farmers make up the People’s Farm and are assisted in their coffee growing endeavors by Kivubelt. The mills and guidance of Umwizey provide critical infrastructure that allow farmers from this region the ability to produce extremely high quality coffee, which maintains its quality throughout the processing, and is able to command price premiums at market.
The Nyamasheke district features a cool climate that is tempered by both the altitude and by the presence of the enormous Lake Kivu.
