Tasting Notes

Sweet, bright notes bring up the forward notes of this coffee. Bright malic notes are reminiscent of apple and red grapes. As the acidity fades, the cup is left with a full, velvety body with the best classical tasting notes associated with Mexican coffees: chocolate, caramel, and a raw or light brown sugar sweetness.

About The Producers

This coffee was produced by the 20 women who compose the “Woman Power Zongolica.” The women who compose this group are members of the Indigenous Nahuas ethnic group and live in the Zongolica area of Veracruz, Mexico. They practice intercropping techniques in which coffee is interspersed with both other crops and native plants, which greatly increases biodiversity, while decreasing the need for fertilizers and pesticides.

This producer group depulps their own coffee with hand-powered depulping devices before drying it on patios for about 15 days. By milling and drying the coffee themselves, the group is able to add an additional layer of quality to their coffee, while saving the costs associated with third-party coffee milling.

By forming this producer group the women are able to share and allocate resources where and when they are needed. In addition, collectivizing allows these women to create lots of coffee that are large enough to sell directly into specialty markets, instead of into commodity markets. This allows members of the group to add value to their coffee by taking measures to increase the quality of their crop, thus making it more desirable for specialty coffee roasters.

How to Brew

This coffee produces sweet, velvety bodied cups with a 1:13 to 1:14 brew ratio

Social Impact

In addition to sourcing from 100% female owned coffee farms, 10% of all profits from this coffee go to support Grounds for Health, which is an organization which screens for and treats cervical cancer in coffee producing regions. By identifying a health issue with a known solution and focusing on access, Grounds for Health is able to dramatically reduce the mortality rate from cervical cancer in developing countries. Black Oak Coffee’s project with Grounds for Health is the only one of its kind in the United States. Read more about Grounds for Health.
