We are continuing to celebrate female coffee farmers and support women’s health initiatives with our delicious new single origin roast from an all-female producer group in Honduras. Black Oak Coffee’s project to support an organization dedicated to women’s health in coffee producing countries is the only one of its kind in the United States.
Caramel sweetness and chocolatey body combine in warm, smooth, full bodied cups of this excellent slightly herbaceous coffee. The sweetness is well balanced by a mild apple and green grape acidity that makes this coffee extremely palatable.
About the Producers
Gea comes from the small farms of more than 300 women producers who, whether because a partner passed away or migrated, seized the opportunities that coffee presents. They rise before dawn to care for children and elders and tend to housekeeping, all before heading to the fields. They create opportunities and resources for one another, lending each other assistance during harvest and the detailed drying and milling process.
These women have also shown their ability to take a rough patch of land and turn it into a successful coffee farm. By planting timber and fruit alongside coffee crops they increase shade, soil moisture, and encourage biodiversity that reduces the need for expensive fertilizers, eliminates the need for costly and poisonous pesticides, and allows for organic farming practices.
This fully washed coffee was directly sourced from women producers in the Lempira and Ocotepeque regions after a training program established in 2015 to support coffee families through the process of recovering from the rust epidemic. It pairs producers with agronomists who train farmers on best practices on plant nutrition, pest control, tissue management and the preparation of biofertilizers.
These farms stand at altitudes between 3,600 and 5,400 feet.
How to Brew
This coffee’s traditional profile produces lovely cups brew ratio hovering around 1:15. Steeping with water between 200-205℉ for no more than four minutes.
In addition to sourcing from 100% female owned coffee farms, 10% of all profits from this coffee go to support Grounds for Health, which is an organization which screens for and treats cervical cancer in coffee producing regions. By identifying a health issue with a known solution and focusing on access, Grounds for Health is able to dramatically reduce the mortality rate from cervical cancer in developing countries.
