This coffee gets its name from the nonprofit mission which it supports: Coffee Kids. The Coffee Kids program is part of the Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung, which trains and supports young coffee farmers in 18 coffee producing nations. This particular lot was produced by 33 young coffee farmers aged 15-39. The coffee importer donates ten cents on every pound back to the producers, which supports the Coffee Kids foundation, which provides entrepreneurial training including finance, agronomy, mentorship, and access to capital.
In addition, the importer matches Black Oak’s two cents per pound donation to World Coffee Research, which breeds new varieties of coffee that are more suitable to a changing climate, resistant to pests and disease, and still produce delicious coffee. These new breeds help ensure a farmer’s stability while reducing the farmer’s costs and the cost of pesticide application on the environment.
