Peru - Rutas Del Inca
Classic Peru, Elevated
Apple, Butterscotch, Chocolate
In a sea of Central and South American offerings, Rutas del Inca jumped out at our tasting panel. We were all surprised to find that a lot of this quality came from Peru, given that specialty coffee production there is still in its infancy and lots of this quality are extraordinarily rare. This microlot coffee opens with hints of apple, grape, and plum, and finishes with sweet classic notes of chocolate, butterscotch, and caramel.
Producer Notes: Peru is perhaps best known for the ancient Incan mountain resort Machu Picchu. This coffee, Rutas del Inca, or Routes of the Inca, is grown along the mountainous, eastern Incan road, the longest, most extensive, network in Pre-Colombia America, connecting roughly 20,000 miles of roads. Until recently, farmers in this region of Peru cultivated the potato, which is native to that area and lived in extreme poverty, but several NGO’s have been working over the past decade to help create a specialty coffee industry to bring jobs and money into the area. This microlot is the work of four male and two female, NGO empowered, smallholder farmers, that together created this delicious, organic, fair trade coffee.
