Coffee Tasting Notes

This coffee is characterized by intense sweetness. Dark brown sugar and molasses are balanced by slightly bitter, subtly tannic, bright notes of red grape and apple peel. As the intensity of the cups fades, floral notes reminiscent of black tea come into focus.

About The Coffee Producer

This lot was produced on the Nkuba farm and processed at the nearby Cafex washing station. By assuming the role once filled by several middle men, Cafex is able to provide farmers with better pay. Cafex’s model also pays coffee farmers on a weekly basis throughout the coffee harvest season, instead of in a lump sum upon delivery. This creates greater levels of economic stability in communities which are often subject to boom and bust cycles.

The coffee industry in Burundi is currently undergoing a renaissance. Washing stations which provide the infrastructure necessary for processing coffee have dramatically increased in number over the past decade. The investment in this infrastructure is key in producing high quality coffee in Burundi as transportation infrastructure is deeply lacking in the nation. The addition of these mico-mills allows for fresh-picked coffee to quickly move from local farms to processing stations, which reduces the degradation of coffee quality associated with long transportation times.
